Have You Ever Felt Moments
Where Penning Your Feelings
Just Wasn’t Sufficient?

Imagine you're laughing so hard that tears are streaming down your face, and all you can manage to type is "HAHAHAHA!" Does that really convey just how hilarious you found the situation?
Or perhaps you're in a busy, noisy place, juggling tasks and surrounded by chaos. Typing out a long message isn't feasible, but a quick voice note could perfectly capture your tone and context. In such moments, wouldn't you choose to send a quick audio message instead?
These scenarios highlight the limitations of text-based communication and the potential for voice messages to convey emotions more effectively.

Emoji Usage: According to recent statistics, 92% of internet users use emojis in their online communication. Specifically, more than 900 million emojis are sent every day on Facebook Messenger, and over 700 million are used in Facebook posts daily (Statista) (World Emoji Day).
Voice Message Usage: While exact statistics on iMessage voice messages are less prevalent, it is known that voice messages are supported and used within the app. iMessage allows users to record and send voice messages easily, and the feature is gaining popularity as it provides a personal touch and improves understanding of the message's tone (The Apple Post) (Guiding Tech).

To address the challenge, we developed the concept of "Audio Reactions in iMessage," allowing users to pre-record and send audio messages as reactions. This new feature aims to bridge the emotional gap in text messaging by adding the nuances of voice.

We started with 10 initial sketches and refined them into a cohesive design. The design was integrated into the iMessage app, making it accessible and familiar to users.

User has a hard time relaying emotions effectively to their partner over text messaging platforms. This creates misunderstandings and conflicts with their interpersonal relationships.
When the user is in public, they are distracted and uncomfortable sending detailed, heartfelt messages that match the tone of the other recipient.
User’s partner expresses their frustration with their communication over texting platforms. User decides something must be done to fix the situation.
User creates pre-recorded audio messages which captures emotions and tones more effectively than text.
User creates a new recording that isn’t part of the pre-recorded list to show appreciation towards their partner.
User can save the recording to their list and label it how they would like for easy access next time.
User’s partner receives the recording and feels validated and happy.
Both parties are happy and feel as though they were able to state how they actually felt and received the validation that was needed.
