BACKGROUND RESEARCH

We collected existing data and met with professional medical staff at UW Medicine.

We learned that...

32%

of births in the U.S. are through cesarean section

10% +

increase of primary and repeat cesarean section in Washing State

UW

The first two weeks post-surgery are crucial for recovery

More Findings:

Emergency C-sections increase postpartum depression risk by 15%;

Low-income mothers without health insurance face major recovery challenges;

C-section mothers must heal while caring for their newborn, which can be overwhelming;

The first two weeks post-surgery are crucial for recovery.

HOW MIGHT WE

Help low-income mothers

who have received a cesarean surgery within the Greater Seattle Area

receive information on recovery care and warning signs of complications

so that they can improve recovery outcomes

in the first two weeks after surgery?

LITERATURE REVIEW & MARKET ANALYSIS

USER RESEARCH

I led the user research, planning surveys and in-depth interviews. We surveyed 32 mothers in Seattle, both first-time and experienced with C-sections, to understand their experiences and challenges.

Over 80% had one or more C-sections.

55% were not well-informed before their C-section.

Recovery described as challenging, unknown, slow, and confusing.

Difficult to reach medical staff without personal connections.

75% didn’t use recovery apps due to inconsistent information.

We also conducted 30-60 minute Zoom interviews with 20 mothers. Here are some quotes:

It was hard having to do it all alone and handling recovery while dealing with a newborn.

When I was breastfeeding, things didn't go well. If there could have something that reminds me that it's okay, it would be really helpful.

I wish I could've known more knowledge prior before the C-Section.

It would be helpful to know what is the expected pain score each day without medication, so this reference can be used to access if pain was somehow normal and had complications.

FEATURES

1 /

Sign in

There is a welcoming page for mothers when they sign in to the app. We ask a few questions related to mothers' surgery and recovery.

2 /

Home Page

Feature 1: Pre Surgery Tasks

Guides mothers through essential pre-surgery tasks using learning modules in video or reading format, covering key topics like breastfeeding and wound care for mothers to reduce anxiety and provide useful post-surgery information.

Feature 2: Daily Check-In

Includes a mental health assessment based on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale to detect early signs of postpartum depression, offering mothers reassurance and support resources, while also covering pain management and physical changes

Feature 3: Journey Cards

Central to the app, these cards provide educational content in three categories: Medical Management, Activity & Wellness, and Personal Care. They offer mothers task guidance for recovery and motivation

Feature 4: Quick Access

Enables easy access to daily journey cards in Medical Management, Activity & Wellness, and Personal Care, highlighting recovery milestones to motivate consistent progress

Feature 5: Goals of the Day

Allows mothers to set daily personal goals or choose from journey card tasks, with reminders to ensure completion

WARMFUL QUOTES

USER TESTING

We conducted two rounds of user testing with 12 mothers on designs V1 and V2. Each had a 15-minute Zoom session, and we recorded their observations. A workshop identified feedback and opportunities.

IMPACT

After finalizing the design, we surveyed both previous and new mothers. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with a 75% increase in mothers reporting that Juno significantly enhanced their recovery experience from V1 to V2.

We also successfully received early pitch funding of around $80,000 after six months’ design and development. We were extremely grateful for our sponsor Dr.Bollag and UW medicine for allowing us to make this project possible!
